in drawing class we're currently working with charcoal, drawing and erasing and photographying each step. the teacher got his inspiration for this exercise on william kentridge's work with charcoal. he started working this way when he was proposed to do an exhibition and he accepted, on the condition that he would make short stop-motion films with his work-in-progress in interaction with whoever visited the exhibition.
today we got to see this movie, "
certain doubts of william kentridge". you can watch the trailer here:
[link] there's some parts of his charcoal videos too.
the movie is brilliant, i'm awestruck. it shows work processes, ways of thinking and ways of using matter, but what fascinated me the most was something way beyond technique.
being a south african artist, kentridge puts a lot of his surroudings in his work (as any creator will do, i guess) - "johannesburg, the 2nd biggest city after paris" something like that. also his work incorporates such a dimention of solitude, of silence.
mostly solitude.
and so he says: what will save us, solitude or love?
and there's a feeling of unsettlement that stays.
